1. Prepare Tools and a Suitable Workspace
First, make sure you’ve got the right tools for the job and a safe place to work: nothing is more frustrating than starting out and then finding you don’t have what you need.
You can usually assemble your kid’s new ride-on car in your garage or back garden, if the weather is clear enough. You typically need to clear a space of approximately 2 x 3 metres. But the more space you have, the more you can move around the car and access different parts easily.
Like any flat-pack delivery, assembly typically requires screws, washers, nuts, and bolts. These are usually supplied alongside your new toy, but check your order information before it arrives to make sure you know what to expect.
You should also check your ride-on car manual for information about what tools you’ll need. Some manufacturers provide Allen keys and other small tools, but it’s best to have a small screwdriver to hand to attach larger components.
2. Unpack and Check Delivery
Before assembling anything, ensure you have all the necessary components. Most ride-on cars come with a checklist of components you’ll need. You can use this to check off different parts of the delivery and see if anything’s missing.
The sooner you discover something’s missing or damaged, the more likely you are to be able to request a replacement part from the manufacturer.

3. Attach External Elements
To attach the fenders, lay down a tarp or old sheet on the floor, flip the car over and use the manual to find where they’re supposed to go on the vehicle. For some models, you just need to snap them into place using plastic tabs.
However, most designs also require screws for added security: insert the screws provided through pre-drilled holes and tighten them in place with a screwdriver.
You can then attach the side steps, if the model you’ve chosen includes them. Align the side step brackets (or the side step itself) with the side step mounts. Insert any plastic fasteners or clips to hold them in place, and then use screws to secure them to the car body, using a screwdriver.
4. Install the Steering System
You can now install the steering system and front wheels. Mount the steering rack, ensuring the suspension springs are positioned correctly as you go. Most ride-on car manuals will come with diagrams or guides showing you what to look out for.
Secure the steering motor to the underside of the vehicle with screws, then connect the new motor’s electric cable to its corresponding connection point using the manual to locate the correct port. You can then insert the steering rod and ensure it’s hooked securely onto the steering rack.
Attach the bar connecting the two front wheels, then secure them in place. You should then tighten the screws until the wheel can spin without wobbling.
5. Install the Rear Axles and Wheels
Now that the front is in place, secure the rear axle mount and install the rear axle. Slide the motors into position, check they’re anchored in place, then attach the rear wheels. You can use a set of pliers to hold the axle steady if necessary.
Like with the front wheels, tighten the screws until the wheel is secure but still able to rotate freely.
6. Complete Assembly
Now you’ve got the basics in place, you can work on the doors, seats, and extra features. Slide the doors into their slots, and secure the seat with screws. If your model comes with LED lights, this is the time to attach the light bar brackets and slide the light bar into place. You should also snap the windshield into place at the front of the car.
Different models come with different additional features, so check the manufacturer’s manual for more specific instructions.
7. Add Any Modifications
If that finished product isn’t enough, you can add stickers, decals, painted sections or other decorations to make your child’s toy unique.
Always check the enclosed instructions for information on the types of paints you can use, as using the wrong paint can damage the surface. Make sure that adding paint or decals won’t invalidate the car’s warranty either, before you get started.
Before applying paints or stickers, wipe the surface clean of dust and debris to ensure the adhesive adheres properly and lasts.
8. Charge and Pair Your Ride-On Car
Before your child’s first playtime, charge the car fully (or according to the manufacturer’s instructions).
This is also a good time to check any Bluetooth connections. Some models, including branded ride-on Mercedes cars, come with Bluetooth speakers and parental remote controls.
Use the instructions to pair any Bluetooth devices with your car ahead of time. Many manufacturers also offer video tutorials on how to connect the car to Bluetooth devices. After all, there’s nothing more disappointing for a kid than having to wait for their car to work correctly right before the first play session!
Though you won’t be in the driving seat, you should also familiarise yourself with the controls. That way, you can answer any questions your kids have and ensure they stay safe at all times.
9. Final Checks
Finally, complete a few final checks to make sure that your kid’s new toy is safe and ready to go. Check that all the components you’ve attached have been installed properly, and make sure you’ve followed the instructions as closely as possible. Ensure that the controls are working correctly, and look for any sign of damage or exposed wires.
